Websites can differ a lot! Not just by the way they look, but by the purpose they are designed to

Some are intended to be simple brochure (or static) websites whilst others need to perform a particular function such as the ones that you use to search for car insurance etc or holidays etc. They all use back-end (invisible to the end-user) databases from which they serve the information you request. Some of these sites also provide payment facilities and so will require sufficient security systems to prevent fraud or other malicious activity.
